Are Epoxy Garage Floors Slippery?

Dry, no. Wet and high-gloss, they can be — and there are three straightforward ways to fix that.

The honest answer

A cured resinous floor is not slippery when dry. Wet is a different question: a smooth, high-gloss coating with meltwater on it is more slippery than bare broom-finished concrete, and it is worth planning for in a Connecticut garage where the floor is wet several months a year.

This is a solvable specification issue, not a reason to avoid coating the floor.

Three ways to add traction

We use one or a combination of these depending on the space.

  • Flake broadcast — the flake layer itself creates surface texture and is the default for garages
  • Slip-resistant aggregate in the topcoat — fine polymer or aluminum oxide grit, adjustable by grade
  • Satin instead of gloss topcoat — reduces the visual and practical slickness slightly

Matching grit to the space

Too much aggregate makes a floor hard to mop and rough on bare feet — a real problem in a finished basement or a home gym. Too little in a commercial kitchen or a wet-process area is a safety issue.

We pick the grade with you based on how the room is used, and we can vary it within a floor: heavier grit on a ramp or entry, lighter across the main area.

Where extra traction is non-negotiable

Ramps and sloped garage aprons, entry transitions where snow gets tracked in, commercial kitchens, wash bays, and anywhere the floor is wet as a matter of routine. In those areas we specify slip-resistant additive as standard rather than as an option.
